Sarath Fonseka

The former Army Commander and later Chief of Defence Staff, General (Retired) Sarath Fonseka has been arrested around 10 PM on Monday at his office.

Already Asian Tribune has reported that Sarath Fonseka might be arrested and court martialed for charges of conduct unbecoming of an officer and a gentleman while he was in service.

Danuna Tilakaratna, the Arms Dealer son-in-law of former Common Opposition candidate General (Retd) Sarath Fonseka, is not only avoiding police questioning but also suddenly has vanished somewhere.

Police are searching for him high and low.

On the 1st of February Danuna Tilakaratne was asked to be present for questioning by the Police. Suddenly on that day he got himself admitted at a private hospital in Narahenpita.

Sarath Fonseka, the unsuccessful Presidential candidate arrested for his military crimes

The scene: office of an important person located opposite the Royal College, Colombo. The time: 10 p m on Monday.

The Provo Martial of the Military Police Brigadier Wijesri enters the Office with authority. He is accompanied by Maj Gen S R Manawaduge, Commandant of Western Province and Puttalam, and the Colonel of the Commando Regiment. The police top echelons are also present.

The Provo Martial of the Military Police Brigadier has an important assignment on hand, that was already talk of the town. Only the timing was not known and how was not known.

As the military top brass enter the office, Mano Ganeshan leader of the Democratic Peoples Front , Somawansa Amarasinghe, Leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Perumuna, Rauff Hakeem, Leader of the Muslim Congress, and Retired Police Captain Senaka Arnold Haripriya de Silva alias Captain Shah Silva are seated there.

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, met yesterday evening in Moscow, the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev .

The two leaders discussed ways to strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries and Russia's economic assistance to Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile Russia and Sri Lanka also signed a $300 million credit line for the purchase of armaments and dual-purpose technology for Sri Lanka's military, Russia's deputy finance minister said.

Dmitry Pankin said it is a 10-year loan with LIBOR plus 3.5% interest.

The arms deal will cover not only purchases but also extensive repairs of Russian military equipment previously delivered to Sri Lanka.

In the meantime it is learnt that Russia has agreed to start oil and gas exploration in the seas off Mannar after President Mahinda Rajapaksa visited the Russian Gas and Oil company Gazprom, Moscow yesterday. The President held talks with the Chief Executive of the company Alexei B. Miller at their head office in Moscow. The Russian company also agreed to give Sri Lanka concessions in the purchase of refined and crude oil.

General Sarath Fonseka who was arrested late this evening will be Court Marshalled for the military crimes he has committed, Director General of the Media Centre for National Security Lakshman Hullugala told state television a short while ago.

Fonseka has been accused of revealing military secrets and also plotting the assassination of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
